“I’m sorry, but I can’t pray for you”, I told my friend.
My friend and his dad called me and told me their story. A large some of money was missing from their bilum (string bag). They wanted me to pray that they could find out who took the money. Then they told me they were also going to see a “glassman” and a “spirit lady” who are people that talk with spirits and dead people. I hesitated for a moment and I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. I really was sorry the money went missing and I genuinely wanted to help them in some way.
But I knew I just couldn’t pray for them. I explained that the spirit lady and the glassman were dealing with Satan and his angels, who are enemies of God. It wouldn’t be right to ask for help from enemies. What if God answered my prayers but they believed the glassman gave them the answer? It wouldn’t be right. I told them that I was truly sorry their money went missing, but I couldn’t pray for them under those conditions.
For the first time I can remember, I was unwilling to pray for someone’s request.
